With a release date of 2011, they've only signed actors for the two characters (foster and lake) and Larter is a "rumored" status, not a for real one. No one else has been cast, there's no indication that the rest of the original characters will be in the movie. Sounds like this may be another of those movies where if they called it anything else, I'd watch it; but as it stands, probably not.

<le sigh>

I will defend Larter. Her parts in Final Destination 2 and Resident Evil 3 were good acting. She looks competent with a gun in her hand. And she plays a split personality super power in Heros that spins your head. (Like Bishop, she looks good in dirt. LOL) While her actual physical attributes may look like the barbie cookie cutter, her acting ability is far better. She came across as the leader of the rag tag "normals" in RE3 very well and played off both Oded Fehr and Mila J. nicely. (Oh, heavens, is there any way to stick OF in this movie? Sorry, drool bucket time again. I sooooo missed him in the third Mummy movie. Not that Li isn't visually wonderful and kick ass on the action movie front, but I missed my tattooed desert dude. or TDD, as we referred to him on one of my other fan lists of the time. He'd make a good Alec, if you don't mind the slight accent that isn't Aussie/English  Grin)

There is, mind you, a possibility that anyone could come across well with MJ and OF to work with.  Cheesy

And if we're going to get international here, there are a lot of talented asian/Indian actors to choose from for the "minor" parts, as well as French, German, Austrian and probably Arabic/African ... A well rounded cast would be nice. <disregard grumbles about last airbender and incredibly stupid casting decisions. If they could really act, it would help and if stupid directors would do their research it would help also!>  Shocked

You're right about Portman, but I suspect she's too high profile for this movie. They're working with TV actors rather than movie actors.

I'm just kinda aghast that Paul and Virginia are the only parts that seem to have anyone attached, even peripherally, to them. UFO was, in many ways, an ensemble show, all of the parts being important on some level; not just the leads.

Oh, shoot, there I go again.

  Cool

G:

We are so obviously not gonna agree on things .. LOL. I love the way MJ handles herself in the action movies. She just looks right with guns in her hands.

Unfortunately, not a clue who most of those people are. Have I mentioned I spend a lot of my time watching anime online, to the exclusion of regular TV? Or DVD movies/anime? I think the only things I watch semi-regularly are NCIS (I adore both Ziva and Abby, and Ducky, of course), Criminal Minds, Sanctuary, Warehouse 13 and ... uhm, ... hmmm. That's pretty much it. (Legend of the Seeker online when I remember it). As for movies, the last thing I went to see was How to Train Your Dragon. (Oh,not quite true. My daughter took me to Letters From Juliet for my birthday <g>. Vanessa Redgrave was, as usual, superb and her Italian love was f'ing gorgeous! Not a clue who he is.)

As to the 30 something crowd, I really haven't got a clue. (Still think Rickman and Depp in something would be killer)

I could picture Jerri Ryan as Col. Lake as she had the intellgence part down well in ST Voyager. Smiley Beautiful and brainy especially with her hair down. Nice eyes too. That's what got me with Wanda! Wink

Yes she was eye candy, but she also came across as being intelligent. (I go for the brainy type, That's one reason I liked Colonel Lake.) I wish they had put Jerri in a standard uniform rather than the cat suit, less is more in that case. Wink

Speaking of uniforms Col. Lake's Moonbase uniform was much more flattering and classy than the skintight catsuits worn by the rest of the ladies up there. Gerry just didn't get it that leaving something to the imagination goes a long way. Wink

Actually, Matt, the female actresses on ST loved their catsuits!  They were padded!  When I met Jeri Ryan at a Con, she was hilariously patting her chest and saying, 'Where'd they go?'  And Mirina Sirtis used to say it was always a downer to change into street clothes at the end of a shooting day and lose all those inches!  Grin

Yeah they do that a lot more now than they used to.  Angry

Nothing is real anymore, That's TV! Grin

I know Jerri said once in an interview that one of those getups was actully painful to wear. Shocked I think it was the first one she had. Wink

directors and producers are looking at the most bang for their buck and at this point think they know what is what. Given the flops of the last decade, most of them are trying to tailor what we see to what they think is right; not what we really want to see. Most of the people with money think they know better than the rest of us what makes good movies, plays, etc. They're wrong most of the time, but that doesn't stop them.

Hmmm, wonder what Peter Jackson would do with UFO? Or the guys who did Stargate. Unfortunately, the big names are not interested. And we get a guy who's never directed???? Oh, well. I guess I'll relegate this to the Dukes of Hazard and Starsky and Hutch, non watchable.

I know, it's a damn shame that it will most likely be a flop, but we can still hope. :Smiley

After all the speculation, at this point, I just want to see this UFO movie made with the UK origins intact. Undecided It would be a welcome end to 2010 seeing it in production with principle photography well underway. Smiley

It will be a welcome beginning to 2011, if they begin filming the UFO movie a.s.a.p. Huh

Gerry Anderson should write it imho.  Look at the debacle of Thunderbirds when helmed by Mr Frakes

The sad thing is that Frakes is actually a very good director -- when he's working on a show he knows.  The episodes and movies of Star Trek he directed were fabulous!  So I agree with you, Claire.  Gerry's the man to do UFO.  Smiley

I second that! But regardless of who directs it, Straker has to be the lead, and it looks like that isn't going to be the case. Angry

You're right Denise, Frakes is very good with what he knows. I liked episodes (DS9, Voyager) that were directed by Levar Burton as well. Wink

I think the key to any remake project is for the writers and director to be intimately familiar with the original yet be above 'fan-boy' status. (Look at what happened to Superman Returns - Singer was a self-admiited fan-boy. Supposedly he was chosen for the project because he did such a good job with the X-Men stuff, but he really couldn't rise above fan-boy for SR. I'm still looking for the movie I thought I saw in the theater.)

Frakes just didn't have the feel for the characters in Thunderbird that he needed. There's also the issue of suspension of disbelief in taking the hardware into live-action. Some things just don't work with today's audiences and the hardware was a big part of it.

I fear a U.F.O. remake is going to suffer from the same issues. Either we're going to see fabulously unbelievable hardware and things that just don't work for modern audiences or we're going to have Paul Foster reprising James Bond in Casino Royale. Or the worst of both worlds.  Sad
