What We're Reading

I thought I'd start a thread where we can tell about what we're reading.

Currently, I'm reading How We Decide by Jonah Lehrer. It's on the current neuroscientific research into how humans make decisions - good and bad.

Two weeks ago, I read Before Dishonor a TNG/Voyager novel by Peter David.

Last Week I re-read The Hunt for Red October and I'm currently re-reading Red Storm Rising both by Tom Clancy.

Next up is The Pandora Principle a TOS novel by Carolyn Clowes, and A Flag Full Of Stars by Brad Ferguson.

I'm rereading one of my favorite Nora Roberts series, the Key Trilogy.  I'm into the second book, which is called "Key of Knowledge."

I'm not having much time to read at the moment - even here! And when I do read (mostly when I go to bed) I get through about 3 pages before my eyes close and the book hits me on the nose.

However, I'm reading...
The Unfree French by Richard Vinen - life in occupied France, 1940 till the end of the war... and some consequences

Raymond Blanc - A taste of my life - mildly autobiographical with added recipes

And probably next on my list, though depends on what takes my fancy at the time...
The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif or
Cat - Freya North... chicklitty in style centred around the Tour de France. Recommended by a friend who said it was lol-funny.

Edited to add...
The Key Trilogy looks interesting, Denise. I've added it to my Amazon wish list.

I should have said that the last books I read were the Millenium trilogy - Stieg Larsson. If you've not read them, I really recommend them. Few trilogies hold my attention through the third book but this really did.

Re-reading The Killings at Badger's Drift by Caroline Graham. Not doing too much reading for pleasure because we are writing A Fete Worse Than Death

You might enjoy this. http://iwl.me/

I was David Foster Wallace, my wife was Stephen King.

Sorry Denise - missed this post. I'm sure you've Googled or checked Amazon by now but if not...

Thanks!  I'll check it out!  Smiley

I just read the 1st two books in the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.  I plan to read the 3rd and final book tonight.  I don't think I'll get any sleep!  These books are riveting!!!!  And it just goes to show that even poorly written material can excel when it's enthralling.  Her trilogy is written in the 'new' style of writing that has emerged over the past 10 years, which means that it's written in first person present tense.  Which really sucks to read!  (Although teens tend to eat it up.)  Even so, I was caught before the end of the first page and couldn't put it down -- even when I got to difficult passages (which can happen with first person present tense!)  I would recommend the series to anyone and intend to get my own copies of the trilogy at the first opportunity!  (And that's before I even know how it ends!)  Grin

Can you tell I liked it?  Wink

Amelia and Ed,
I finally went to this site!  They said I wrote like Arthur Clarke.  Shocked Shocked Shocked  He's one of the first sci-fi writers I ever read.  Classic!  Cool

Well, after the Doan & Carstairs novels by Norbert Davis, I read Heat Wave by Richard Castle. A fun read, but I wonder who really writes those? And Jake Westerby: Deep Undercover by Derek Adams. (Not up to the same standards of his earlier stuff). Right now I'm reading the Dr. Thorndyke Mysteries Collection Vol 1 by R. Austin Freeman. so far, seems to be sort of Sherlock Holmes type mysteries. Afterwards, I will probably read The Mark of the Wolf by Derek Adams (an aforementioned earlier work that I have not read yet), but I've got new Reacher, Falco and Lovejoy books I have not read yet, so must get to them too.

And, hey! That site says I write like James Joyce! WooHoo! (aka: incomprehensible - LOL!)

Oh, but Denise, please tell us, what did you REALLY think of that trilogy by Suzanne Collins?

Course, I have read several stories from the Library too, but I assumed we were talking professionally published material ...

BTW, I hate first person present tense POV! Jonathan Kellerman did it once and I did not appreciate that at all. It reads like D&D notes! I mean, reading over my own D&D notes might be fun reliving the adventure, but who the hell wants to read someone else's D&D notes??

I may have to browse for some more next week. Wink

What did I really think about The Hunger Games trilogy?  I thought it rocked!  Here's what was so cool about it:
1. Totally intriguing post-apocalyptic USA
2. The main character had no idea how wounded she truly was because of her life experiences, but she was also truly brave and caring
3. Great love interest -- such a good man (you'd like him, Matt!)

What didn't I like?
1. Collins rushed the ending (kinda like I did w/ my Face-off series and had to redo) and it pissed me off that I'd gone through hell for 3 novels only to be ripped off by the denouement!
2. First person present tense sucks!  But it was surprisingly readable all the same.

Now you know, Yuchy.  Gonna read them?  Huh

Remind you of someone does he? :Smiley

I like first person in general, if it's written well, and that's not easy to do. I can see where first person present tense might be awkward to read. Choice of words becomes very important. First person with a lot of action can be an enthralling read. Wink

Probably not. But, never know! If I find them cheap for my Kindle, I just might.

I really like First Person POV, but NOT First Person Present tense - it's just irritating.
