Hi,

how do you hold it? If you write narrative (as opposed to dialogue or thought), but from the POV of the character, do you shorten (I mean "wouldn't" instead of "would not" or "doesn't" instead of "does not") or not? And why the one or the other? Or do you mix? And what is your purely grammatical take on that?

I ask because I see quite some shortening done within the narrative lately (here and elsewhere) and to me it is a distinct no-no-never-ever.

Depends on the context; if it's within dialogue and would be correct for the speech, then go with it. If it's a more formal piece of prose (for example a report) , then it's not really acceptable

Hi,

thanks for the input - so I am not being hopelessly old-fashioned there  Smiley
