Interesting article, Deb.  I quite agree that if you hate yourself, you're certainly a long way from being happy.  One thing they didn't mention under the heading of liking yourself was to be nice!
Somehow that basic but important tool gets left out of these scenarios, and it's the most vital one to remember.  If you're not nice, you'll never like yourself.  And nasty people are never happy.  Angry

Very true - I've seen this aphorism on stickers : Misery is Optional.

The way I figure it - unless there's a real medical/chemical issue, misery IS optional. Even in prison camps where people were/are dying every day under horrific conditions, there were still people who recognized that what was being done to them didn't change the fact that they had a choice in how to react - become hateful, bitter, and vengeful or maintain themselves with dignity, self-worth and an appreciation of others.

I like that aphorism!  Smiley

Mine is "We make our own hell."  (In other words, if your life sucks so bad, stop complaining and change it!)  But you know me, I'm proactive like that.  Grin

I agree, we are all responsibile for our own happiness. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes people a while to realize that they are sick and tired, of being sick and tired. Sometimes you have to hit bottom before you make the changes that are needed to take control of one's life. Undecided

It takes courage to change our situation, as we can become comfortable in even an unhealthy enviorment.

Thanks, Deb, for letting us know about these cool articles!  Jane's especially brought out several points that I've been trying to make for years.  And thanks for not just taking the time to surf the net for new ideas, but for being willing to share the treasures you find with the rest of us.   Cool
