As it appears, UFO was originaly set to have another series, but due to changes, it had been cancelled and in 1975, Space:1999 hit the screens. When I watch both shows, I often wonder what it would be like if UFO:1999 had actually gone ahead.

What would've you liked to see in the show if it had been produced?  Huh

Thats true however apparently there was going to be a character in the show that was listed as Colonel John Koenig and that he was going to be Straker's fourth second in command. Another thing that amazed me was that the Eagles were originaly set to be modified Interceptor's Cheesy

The other thing that would need to be changed was the premise for the show.  It was ludicrous!  Didn't the writers know their physics at all????  :Smiley

It's my observation that most TV and film writers have no clue about physics and even if they do, the special effects people and directors will ignore them in favor of flash and awe.

Look at the movie The Core - some great little ideas there about what might happen if the magnetosphere gets screwed up - but there is NOTHING humans can do that can stop the Earth's core from rotating because ITS rotation is related to the PLANET'S rotation. And the planet was still rotating.

I can just about guarantee that when this was brought to the attention of the director he just shrugged and said, 'The audience won't care.'  Huh

Thats true, but remember back in the 60's and 70's NASA was a big thing along with existance of UFO's so I suppose at the time, no one would really care about the physics and other scientific stuff, not even Gerry Anderson. Anything to do with space ships and cool effects would've easily be classed as a hit.

Well, they seriously underestimated the intelligence of their audience!  Even as a High School student, I knew the show's premise sucked!  Tongue  And I hadn't even taken a physics course yet!!!

I must say that I agree with that. I reakon that ever since Star Trek was a hit back in the 60's everyone just wanted to compete with their Sci-Fi shows. Shows like Classic Battlestar Gallactica, Buck Rogers, UFO and Space: 1999 were in all competeing shows in the the Sci-Fi light. It was like everyone was too dumb to add real Scientific facts to their shows apart from one or two stories in the original Star Trek.

The most ludacris thing ever in 60's and 70's Sci-Fi was the Moon blasting out of Earth's orbit in Space: 1999. that scenario is physically impossible.

That came about as a demand from ITC New York that there were to be NO stories based on Earth, so it was a case of either blowing up the Earth or blowing up the Moon

A space station stolen by aliens? The colony stolen by aliens?
Moonbase is quarantined after WWIII? Earth is wiped by a meteorite strike?

Supes didn't stop Luthor from trashing the planet?

Hey, I destroy the planet on a fairly regular basis. They couldn't come up with a good plan for marooning Moonbase?

So right, in fact I poked fun at 1999 in Soul Mates. Any explosion creating enough delta-vee for escape velocity would have spilt the moon in two, not to mention the havoc it would have created on Earth. And they never would have reached relativistic velocities. The nearest solar system would have been thousands of years away. Shocked

More than just a few plot holes there. Cheesy

How about - Earth is trashed by fill in the blank. The Moon had manufacturing and was building a warp-capable ship. Marooned personnel take off on ship - or they used a Spindizzy to turn Moonbase into a ship - or the warp field or Spindizzy was too big and took the Moon with it, or...

Like I say, only one solution - you're not trying.

Yeah at least that's a premise for a show. That idea actually sounds like a failed Gerry Anderson sci-fi show called "Eternity."
