Please see the NFic section for a detailed explanation as to the defining lines between Fic and NFic in any culture.

The only thing you can do is to go with your own feelings!

I personally don't object to passionate love scenes, (Denise does them beautifully! and I am in awe of her abilities!) as long as they are not too detailed. Violence is okay as well, but anything too 'intimate' is possibly better inNfic. I suppose the dfifference is betweeen the concept  of passion and sex and the amount of detail!

Skulls set the benchmark I think. A necessary sex scene that was integral to the story, but of necessity had to be 'raunchy' (I think i would term it.) Definitley not gratuitous sex.  and not for under 16's to read!

You should read some of the stuff on the Belah Gatt Thunderbirds site...... explicit incest and very unpleasant. I flicked through once and decided that there are some really sick individuals out there. Father/son relationships.etc.

AS for ratings. We are pretty liberal here in the UK, obviously!

I've seen some 12A films that shoud have been 15, for their violence content, but the sex side of the rating system tends to be tighter.

If you wouldn't want a 16 yr old reading it, then Nfic.  My viewpoint only.

As for Slash.. Nfic def! (although personally, not even there !)

Hi Louise,

grinning here. The sex scenes in Skulls are so nicely written (compliments again to dragon), that *I* would have nothing against a 16 y/o reading that. 16 is pretty well-nigh adult in my book. There's rather little I wouldn't allow a 16 y/o to read.

Not 13 y/o though, but as most teenagers above 14-15 (at least hereabouts) have firsthand knowledge, why not some NICE stuff, instead of crude porn (which they trade these days by the age of 10 already *sigh*).

PG however relates specifically to UNDER 13.

I've nothing against well-written gay (slash) fiction or fanfic, even of the explicit kind (Cecilia Tan anyone? Just love her stuff, absolutely well written, but definitely adult-rated!).

For me it also largely depends on ability and style, and if that is superior I do not mind gratuitous stuff, a bit of relaxation ought to be nice for everyone, que no?  Grin

PG here is rated as being General Viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children (below 12)

the rating 15 states; suitable only for persons of 15 ys and over

The Dark Knight, which has scenes in it that even I can't watch ( and I can watch and enjoy most violent scenes  in films) is rated as 12;  'Contains strong fantasy violence and sustained threat'

UFO is rated PG!
So. Take your pick!

That was what I was asking about. LOL. I hope the Librarian can clear this up soon. I'd hate to have to move that story to Nfic just for a few words.

Well, as board owner, here's my take on the subject.

The line between R and X is extremely nebulous. In writing it comes down to this - is the raw sex there for it's own sake or for the story? Is the sex in the story for the titillation factor or because it illustrates the evolution of the couple's relationship?

If the story would be just fine with those scenes cut out, then chances are they are there for the titillation value, not for the story.

As to the difference between PG-13 and R - well, frankly I haven't quite figured that out. One of the other groups I write for I had a scene where a woman was raped by her husband on her wedding night - the non-consensual sex was okay for PG-13, but the description of her crying afterword with 'his seed running down her legs' was not.

Go figure.

BTW - the open section of this board really needs to be PG-13. It's open to everyone, including people in places where the rules against kids reading about sex are much stricter.

Besides - the curiosity to see what's in Nfic might make them want to join.

As for using 'bad' words - If it is essential to the character to swear - okay. If anyone here has seen the movie 'Hopscotch' - one of the characters is a foul-mouthed a-hole who can't say a word without swearing, and it just isn't the same with the language cleaned up. (I bet you didn't know that FBI stood for f**king ball-busting imbeciles, did you?) But what makes it great is ONLY this one character swears and everyone around him reacts as if he crawled out from under a rock. Technically, it's R rated for language - but I let my five-year-old watch it so we could both laugh at Myerson.

BTW- If you have concerns about a word being acceptable - star it like I did for 'f**k'.  Which, oddly enough, makes it even more titillating.  Wink

Here is a link to the Fiction Rating System. Print fiction has slightly different rules than film - I mean, how can you ban full frontal male nudity when is isn't a graphic or photo? The difference between PG-13 and R  in this case is how rhapsodic you're waxing while describing him.

Deb, 'Hopscotch' is one of my faves!  Great movie in every way!  And yes, it's more interesting when you localize the swearing to one character.  You can have more fun that way.  'Usual Suspects' did it with an incomprehensible character -- with incredible results!  I'm still trying to figure out how to transfer that kind of character to print!!!  Cheesy

Hmmm ... well, if Eodearas had dismembered Dwayne on screen, Sorcerer would be x-rated. Not having had any major objections to the scene, I will take it I did it cursorily <--- pretty sure that's not a word  Cheesy  enough that it's not an issue. (That could make things pretty confusing if I end up posting back and forth between the two areas because Eodearas and Ed get out of hand on me ... )

That's the problem with posting as you write isn't it. I still don't know whether GLitch will be Nfic adn Dark Mattrers 3 is looking pretty violent adn nasty at the moment. I may have to delete and repost. depends on Ed and the aliens!.
But,, I have two extrememy rude and very funny UFO jokes .. pm me if you'd like them... Both Nfic rated!!  Adapted from  ones ! learned several years ago.

Well, instead of deleting and reposting, I suggest you simply post the smutty sections in Nfic with a link to them from the rest of the chapter. I've done this myself on other boards.

(Believe it or not, there are people who will simply not wade into the Nfic pool even to read a great story.)

I believe the under-aged and non-registered will still be blocked.

As for where the line is - if you don't want your 90-year-old grandmother, or the twelve year old next door OR your twenty-five-year-old boy child to read it, it goes in Nfic.

Hi Deb,

anyone not registered or not giving his/her age doesn't even see there's a section for NFic. So I am sorry to say, but if you want people to register to go there, you need to fiddle with the controls somehow. I know SMF can do that (have a forum closed, but still show it exists to all), no idea whether YABB can.

Depends entirely on the granny, the 12 y/o and how one raised one's kids...  Cool

All this is so damn subjective. *huge sigh*

Well, in this case the twenty-five-year-old boy child is horribly embarrassed that his Mom not only writes fanfiction but has been known to write smutty fanfiction.

Though my here excursion into fanfiction is pretty recent and new, interest in stuff considered "smutty" by some is not. My nearly eighty years old mother just loves it. Goes to tell, eh?  Grin

I've been looking for more of your stories, where do you post those, if not here? I loved those I could read here.

I wouldn't worry about that Deborah! My entire family ignore anything I do in the way of writing or drawing! I should be sitting in the rocking chair and knitting according to them. ( Hubby included!)
