Thanks, Matt!

Claire, what a lovely tribute to the man who made Straker The Man!  The time I met him at the Fanderson Con in 2002, he looked sickly and was a bit less congenial to the fans than I'd been told he was (probably because he was ill!)  But he still came out onto the dance floor during the 70's -80's Ball and danced for a while.  I hadn't been sure if he would stick it out for the entire Con with the way he was looking.  But he did!  Smiley

That article is beautifully written, it made me cry. Denise, he was dying, that is why he looked so bad. About him losing Joan, he told Helen he was going to stop acting, he was so depressed over her death. I read several of his letters to Helen, and while I can't go into the contents fully out of consideration for his family and friends, he discussed illness in one. However, neither Helen nor Paolo guessed how really ill he was until he passed away. I didn't buy what had been put out, and Paolo and I had exchanged letters during the time I ran EBF and after Ed died, so I pleaded with Paolo to find out from his widow and surviving daughters what had actually killed him. Paolo was so gracious, he was grieving himself but he still did that for me, and the family was grieving but they too allowed me to know the truth and to announce it. I learned he had lived with leukemia for 12 years. In those years he still had contact with his fans, lived his life normally, in the way he wanted. I miss him so much, he was almost like a family member to me while I was running Ed Bishop Fans. I find it really hard to look at the picture of his gravestone, but he's buried beside Daniel, and I'm sure that is what he wanted.
Thank you for that account, Claire. It was beautiful to me. I admit I am jealous of you and the other fans who he allowed to get to know him.  Smiley I have my pictures, theatre books, magazines, articles, signed photographs, dvds, audio tapes of his book narration and his live interviews and most of all I have his personal check which I won from a charity auction. It isn't possible for me to hear about the new UFO movie without sadness, knowing he would have loved to take part in it.
I miss you George.

Thyroid trouble?  Gak!  They killed my thyroid at the end of '94 because of Graves' disease, and I had to go on synthroid for life in March of '95.  It sucks.  Undecided  I'll never be a size 12 again!  However, my specialist told me that exercise and diet changes wouldn't have any effect on the weight gain -- and he was wrong!  I don't lose much weight, but I have lost several inches, which in my book counts for more, because it means a size change.  At least I'm not gaining anymore, which was truly terrifying as I was gaining a size every 6 months!  Shocked
My doctor babies me when I get my bloodwork done, since I warned her that I faint very easily!  Roll Eyes  She lets me lie down and talks to me to take my mind off the needle!  Wink

I'm glad they do that because it is a nightmare when they just go in and take blood and leave you to deal with the aftermath.

My nurse lets me hold the top of my arm instead of using the tourniquet as it makes the rest of my arm sore.  usually I'm bruised for weeks on end but doing it this way it doesn't bruise as much and I'm able to type wha-hay.  Sory being late with the rply but since doing all this writing for my Ed piece I have been getting a bit upset remembering, which is normal I guess.  Those times were happy for me, and it was the only time I really felt good.

Thank you for saying that.  I honestly thought it would be a doddle to put words on a page but i have been reminiscing about him so much, I didn't really grieve when he died for some reason and I guess I'm going through a small delayed type of grief for him.  There'll never be another one like him, he was truly special.  That's what I meant when I said he always had time forhis fans, he would never miss a convention even when he was so ill and stuggling, he still came along.  The bit where I saw Ed lean against the railiing at Clacton made me very aware there was something wrong but I didn't intrude I just asked him if he was ok and made him jump a little bit, which made me feel like a heel but then on a lighter note he did that to me in his garden all those years ago.  I miss him (and Joan) every day, he was one of a kind to be sure.

Thanks WR for the lovely words, I too had problems writing it!  I was friends with Ed not his entire family so it was a waiting period for me to find out what he died from, after he passed I was told what it was.  The article was a nice way of remembering him for me but it also brought me to tears as I remembered him and that he's no longer here.  Those days were truly fun and I'm sure other people knew him better than I did.  I've always been one to be respectful of peoples feelings and Ed and his family were no exception, I am always fiercely protective of the people I am friends with and loyal too.  Stubborn as an ox as well Wink I could have been more intrusive into his life but that's not who I am and I cannot abide people who think they own a person or have the right and justification to trash his memory just because something they are in the public eye or that they percieved he did allows them justification.  Ed was not a horrible man at all, he was a gentle and caring man and that's how I remember him.  The people who trash him would not be doing this if he we still here, and I'm sorry for his family having to read or be aware of the vilenss circulating elsewhere on the net.

George Victor (Ed) Bishop - one of the true greats, a loving family man and a brilliant actor to boot.  RIP gentle soul, we miss you.

Although the character of Ed Straker was seem by most as a hard nose, Bishop developed his character beautifully, allowing his gentleness as a man to shine through, in those rare glipmses in the show. To quote from Denise's story Fallen Heroes, "He was a giant among men!" Smiley

We miss you Ed Bishop!

He was a giant among men I completely agree, I'm glad you enjoyed the piece, there will be more to come as I still have memories (believe it or not) from UFOria 2 and Fanderson 91 to recall.  Ed will always be missed by those of us who genuinely loved him, he was a good man and left such good thoughts of him with us when he left.

I certainly will but give me time to write it and I'm also still editing the story (some minor rewrites going on too) editing is the pits isn't it? Has to be done tho'

Oh ok then, your little pleading smiley made me start writing it Smiley  Either that or I could feel an imaginary arm being bent up my back  Grin  Hopefully be doing that as well as the story.

Isn't that smiley adorable?  I found him at planetsmilies.net .  I'm thinking that I need to stockpile my favorites from there, so that I can find them easily when I want to use them.  It's not easy going through the whole bunch each time I want a fun smiley.

It had to be him who inspired you, because I would never resort to violence.  It's the crutch of the foolish.  Wink  Glad to hear you're going to write more!  Smiley

He is adorable, I'll have to go and look at that site.  You're absolutely right about violence, never ever solves anything ... pens and swords?
As for writing more, I always seem to be editing ... but it's not good submitting stuff I'm not happy with otherwise you guys wouldn't be happy with it either.

The pen is mightier than the sword? Pen and sword? Sword and Pen? What if the sword is a pen? Or the pen is the sword? I submit this photograph to the court as evidence, my Lord:
