Okay. Thanks for explaining, Shado Librarian. Unfortunately I already deleted her PM to me and my reply. I'll wait to see what happens next time.

In the Personal Messages - the little envelope icon changes to an open envelope if the recipient has read it OR has it emailed to them (in which case it's assumed they have read it.)

Hi again SnowLeopard,
Received your message and I responded. But after I sent it there's nothing to tell me you got it. So if you didn't let me know. I also asked you a question pertaining to the fight scene and put on there you could either respond here with a PM or simply e-mail me as I gave you my address.

Thanks for that, Librarian, duly noted!

DebbieJ, I've pm'd you re the duel.

Moo, yes indeed, it was Derek Jacobi.
I''ve just been watching 'Reflections in the water' which I think is really the only episode which has Ed in hand-to-hand combat, to see how he gets on. Of course, a diver's knife is a different proposition entirely to a F-S. I might give that to Freeman, he'd love it.

In regards to the fight scene - the 'grizzled weapons master vs the young overconfident buck' is a fictional knife-fight staple. (Look at Dune) So long as the scene is in your own words and you don't directly quote the character's words from the other work(s) unless you give them (the source) attribution, you're good.

Hi SnowLeopard,

I had the opportunity years ago to handle an original Fairbairn-Sykes and was really impressed with both the heft and the perfect balance. A well trained user could throw it some distance and puncture a recipient neatly. They weren't general issue items but were popular as gifts to commemorate some event. That's how the one I handled came into my friend's collection. I had been given to his father after some special project between USAF and RAF during Korea.

I think I've seen that show. Derek Jacobi if my memory is working... I am a fan of mystery stories and am currently working through a complete anthology of Sherlock Holmes stories. There are a lot of them...

All the best,
Moo

Hi Debbie and Moo!

Debbie, sorry, I should have flagged 'Collaborator' as one of mine, not an episode. (I wish!!  Wink  ) Thanks Librarian for helping out.

Moo, that Fairbairn-Sykes is a vicious-looking piece of kit  Shocked ... I have to admit, I wrote that bit, then read it through and thought 'that won't do at all' so I called in Alec to cover Ed's behind.

Ed hasn't had an opportunity to arm himself, as he and Foster have just got off the LM, and although they've changed into their 'civvies' to go to the studio, he couldn't very well don his shoulder holster without Paul noticing. Also, he has to be defenceless in this scene, so that he's not tempted to make any aggressive moves.

I have the impression that SHADO personnel don't generally go 'equipped'. Certainly Paul didn't, in 'Cat with 9 lives'. And when Ed's walking around minus his jacket e.g. in SkyDiver, he's not wearing a weapon. Though in 'ESP', of course, both Ed and Alec are armed - and a fat lot of good it does them   Shocked

(Oops - should have been 10 lives of course   Embarrassed  )

(But I'm going to have to have him use that knife somehow. I'm reminded of a Brit TV series called Cadfael, set in the England of the early 12th century. Cadfael is an ex-Crusader turned Benedictine monk and something of a mediaeval Sherlock Holmes. In a story entitled 'The virgin in the ice' he is accosted by another ex-Crusader, Olivier de Bretagne, when they are both looking - separately, and unaware of each other's presence - for a pair of lost youngsters. Olivier grabs Cadfael and holds a knife to him:

Olivier: I have the advantage of you, brother.
Cadfael: And I think we should both have died.

Olivier looks down, and sees Cadfael's own knife (hidden away in his herbery since his Crusade days, in defiance of his vow of poverty) at his stomach!

That sort of situation turns up a lot in adventure fiction, so I think it wouldn't be plagiarism.)

Turns out I missed reading The Collaborator by SnowLeopard and that's another reason I thought she was referring to the series. She may have thought I had already read it. But now I have so thanks again Shado Librarian for pointing me in the right direction. Roll Eyes

Collaborator is a fanfic - not an episode.

Hey SnowLeopard or Moo, whichever one of you can answer this. When SnowLeopard was explaining to me about what Jackson did to Ed in *The Collaborator*, when I went home today I tried looking for that episode from my UFO DVDs. So I could get a bit more insight as to what's going to happen in her story. But that episode is not there. Did it get renamed for the DVDs? If so please tell me which ep. it is because for the life of me I can't remember it. Unless it got left out of my set. But I have the entire set or so I thought.  Many thanks!

Hey Moo!
I agree with you that Straker would have some sort of back-up hidden on him but SnowLeopard said he was going to have Alec in the wings covering his back. Perhaps she'll keep that in mind when she pens this out. I'm going to give her an entire fighting sequence and she can do what she likes with it. And when I get home I'm going to brush up and watch my UFO dvd of the episode she mentioned to me because right now I can't remember it. LOL!

Hi All,

I like the idea of Paul and Straker in a fencing duel with no safety gear or rules but I can't imagine either Straker or Alec disarmed with no back-up plan. Both are too savvy to get caught unarmed so easily. I can picture Paul's blade tip at his throat but failing to see Straker's hand on the grip of the classic Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife in his boot. Not a dirk but a classic military dagger heavily used by both MI and OSS agents. It dates back to 1940 Britain, so it's fitting.

Nobody who carries a weapon would place all their eggs in one basket. Especially when the baddies come at you from all angles and at all times like they do for our SHADO friends.

Write-Rat, it's great to see you back on line. I hate that your bldg. mgmt. is living the role of stool sample. It's not hard for them to do the right thing, yet they fail continually. That is beyond contemptible. Keep in touch...

Hee hee! I actually was thinking of writing Paul coming out ahead of the game. So that will work, SnowLeopard. But when you're ready and give me a little bit more information pertaining to the fight I may change things a bit more.
I only started writing parts because I'm in-between my two on-going Musketeer stories right now over at Archive. Might work a little bit more on this sometime today at work as well.

Oh BTW my one on-going Musketeer story right now is based on Three Men and a Baby. I've called it Three Musketeers and a Bebe. LOL! It's a totally different version where d'Artagnan is a 3 yr. old toddler and becomes orphaned and adopted by the inseparables. Everyone apparently loves it as I've gotten tons of feedback and hits on the story. It has now become my longest ever series as I'm over 30+ chapters. It was requested by a reader from Greece who has now become a fast friend. When I run out of ideas she gives me more and another writing pal from from England. It's been so much fun.
But now that you and I have been talking about Paul and Ed I've had this plot bunny running around in my head that won't let go about Paul being hit by an alien beam and turned into an 8 yr. old kid with Ed becoming his guardian. But I don't have time to do this even if I wanted too. At least not right now. If I ever did I'd post it at Archive and give you guys a link to it here. I don't bother with betas as sometimes they do take the fun out of writing for me. A great writing friend of mine from Stargate, who I now hooked into writing Musketeer stories, told me once that when writing doesn't become fun anymore you stop. I've had several stories done and betaed for Stargate zines our writing group would put out and they were sold. And because not being in the same time zone as the beta it would take awhile to get it done. One beta was picky where another wasn't so much. I like fig-newton's Stargate challenges because I got invited to do one recently and she was very fast and I hardly had anything wrong to correct except some punctuation. LOL! Which ironically I originally had in my story to begin with but took them out because a previous beta on another story always told me I put too much in. Well... duh!
Anyway, that bunny keeps on nibbling on my ear.  Smiley
There are not enough hours in the day or days in the week to get all the writing done I'd like too.
Take care and will wait to hear back from you.
